DiSC: Understanding Behaviour and Communication

DiSC helps us explore observable behaviour and communication preferences, including how you approach problems, people, pace and structure.

It can give you a useful starting point for understanding how you naturally communicate, what you may prioritise and how other people may experience your approach.

Within Discover Insights, DiSC is one of three complementary perspectives. It is used alongside Enneagram and Attachment at Work to build a richer picture rather than relying on one model to explain the whole person.

What are the four DiSC styles?

DiSC describes four broad behavioural styles. Most people recognise elements of more than one, and the purpose is not to put you into a fixed box. The model gives us a practical language for noticing differences in pace, priorities and communication.

D : Dominance

Often more direct, fast-paced and focused on results, challenge and action.

C: Conscientousness

Often more analytical, careful and focused on accuracy, quality and structure.

I : Influence

Often more expressive, people-focused and energised by interaction, ideas and enthusiasm.

S : Steadiness

Often more patient, supportive and focused on cooperation, consistency and stability.

The D Style:

These people are assertive, to the point, and wants the bottom line. They are forceful, direct, and strong-willed.

The I Style:

These people are assertive, to the point, and wants the bottom line. They are forceful, direct, and strong-willed.

The S Style:

These people are assertive, to the point, and wants the bottom line. They are forceful, direct, and strong-willed.

The C Style:

These people are assertive, to the point, and wants the bottom line. They are forceful, direct, and strong-willed.

When can DiSC be useful?

DiSC can be useful whenever you want a clearer understanding of how you naturally communicate, respond to situations and work with other people. Some of the areas it can help you explore include:

DiSC can be useful on its own as a framework for understanding behaviour, but within Discover Insights it forms one part of a broader personality assessment process.

How DiSC fits within Discover Insights

DiSC is useful, but it does not explain everything about a person.

Behaviour is only one part of the picture. Two people may show a similar behaviour for very different reasons, and the same person may respond differently depending on the relationship, situation or level of pressure.

That is why Discover Insights brings DiSC together with Enneagram and Attachment at Work.

DiSC helps us explore observable behaviour and communication preferences.

Enneagram adds insight into some of the motivations and drivers that may sit underneath familiar behaviour.

Attachment at Work can help us explore patterns around trust, reassurance, independence and connection in working relationships.

When you complete Discover Insights, you complete all three assessments. I review the information before we meet, then we have a guided interpretation conversation where we explore what stands out and how the different perspectives may connect with your own experience.

The aim is practical self-understanding, not to give you a personality label.

Discover Insights includes all three assessments and reports, preparation and a 45 to 60-minute guided interpretation conversation.

Testimonial

As a reflective leader I thought I had used enough tools to really understand how I thought and worked (MBTI, Belbin etc) but working with Jo through the DISC process was enlightening. No it wasn't just a tick box exercise with an automated response, it was an opportunity for Jo to use all her knowledge of industries, ways of working, business psychology, understanding of team behaviours and so much more to coach me through myself.

Jo evaluated the report, brought it to life with examples and questions, then took me through some scenarios. I really get where my drive is coming from, how to harness it and adapt it now too. And the softer stuff was helpful too!

Thanks Jo, wish we'd done this much sooner.
