How can individuals benefit from taking personality tests?
There are many reasons why you might take a personality test, but perhaps the most common ones are either for your career development or own personal growth. Personality forms the foundation of who you are as an individual, it can explain how you behave whether that be at work or in your relationships.
Taking a personality test as part of a recruitment process is becoming more and more popular, and indeed is used by many Fortune 500 companies,so this might be something you are asked to do within your career. But there are also huge benefits to you personally taking a personality test.
It can give you a deeper understanding of the things that you find the most challenging, or that motivate you to achieve more and the skills that you could bring to any job role or business. That understanding can also help you to understand how you best interact with other people particularly those that are different to you.
Are certain personality tests better suited for specific goals?
I am often asked which is the best personality test for an individual to take, and being honest there are so many different personality tests that could be taken there is no single right or wrong test to take. Each coach or personality specialist that you meet will have their own personal preference or top-rated personality test that they prefer.
For example, those within leadership training and development will often prefer to use something like the Myers Briggs type indicator test (MBTi). Many people in a team building or recruitment business will also like Myers Briggs, or indeed DiSC profiling. If you are working more with a psychologist or counsellor, they may reference tests such as Enneagram, or attachment styles tests or quizzes.
What are the key differences between popular personality assessments?
The best way to compare personality tests is to consider what it is you are hoping to learn by taking such a test. Some tests are more focused towards explaining the types of behaviours that people will exhibit, others are designed more to look at our emotional drivers and there are also tests that are designed to explore all relationships.
There are many online personality tests or personality quiz websites that you can visit so it can be difficult to work out which is the best personality test to take. Whilst there is inevitably some valuable information no matter which test you take, the most accurate are those tests which are scientifically based.
I am often asked which is the most accurate personality test or how to decide which test to take and the response I give is always to ask what the purpose of taking a test is. For example, in a work context for recruitment, promotion, and team building my personal preference would be DiSC profiling because that is a simpler tool to explain and understand. If you are looking to gain a deeper level of understanding about yourself so that you can address challenges you may be experiencing or maximise your success in navigating life’s journey then I would suggest that you take a test that looks into why you behave the way you do, such as the Enneagram test.
